Romance doesn’t end with age—it simply evolves. At Berwick, and in the lives of many older adults, “date night” continues to thrive in all its beautiful, creative, and comfortable forms. Whether it’s a quiet glass of wine in the garden or a spirited game of Scrabble, seniors continue to show us that love and connection are timeless.
A Sunset & a First Kiss
Marian & Jim – Berwick Qualicum Beach
Was it love at first sight? Or perhaps just two people discovering a joyful new chapter of life together? For Marian Boyd and Jim Heinrichs, it all began with a game of bridge at Berwick Qualicum Beach. One evening, they decided on a drive down to Qualicum Bay to watch the sunset—and there, under a canopy of colour, they shared their first kiss.
Now, three years later, they remain an active part of the Berwick community—playing in the Berwick band, attending events, and making new memories. Jim, now 90, takes on something new each year—this year, it was modeling in the fashion show!
Redefining Romance
Andrew & Joyce – Berwick House
Andrew and Joyce have had to adapt what date night means for them, but that hasn’t lessened the joy. With limited mobility, their adventures now come in the form of travel documentaries, shared popcorn, and comfortable evenings in their suite. “Andy makes the best popcorn!” Joyce beams.
From long lunches at their favourite restaurant to wine on their flowering balcony and fierce Scrabble matches in the garden, they’ve discovered that connection doesn’t depend on going out—it thrives in being present.
A Partnership Built on Joy
Peter & Pauline – Berwick Comox Valley
Married since 1976, Peter and Pauline Bibby have always embraced life as a team. “We enjoy eating out together and doing pretty well everything together,” they say.
They hold fast to one meaningful piece of advice they received early in their marriage:
“Don’t try to make each other better—make each other happy.”
It’s a simple philosophy that has guided their nearly five decades together.
The Little Things that Matter Most
Carmen & Paul – Berwick Royal Oak
When asked about their secret to staying close and connected, Carmen and Paul offer a recipe that’s equal parts laughter and intention:
“Let’s see…I think keeping a sense of humour—especially when together 24/7!
Communication with each other, family, and friends.
Planning outside activities and getaways to look forward to.
Lots of kisses, hugs, and laughter.
Viva l’amour!”
It’s a charming reminder that affection, adventure, and shared joy never go out of style.
The Heart of Date Night
What we’ve learned from these couples is that date night isn’t about where you go—it’s about who you’re with. It’s the shared laugh, the kind gesture, the long conversation at sunset. At Berwick and beyond, seniors are redefining romance, proving that love not only lasts—it evolves with grace, humour, and deep appreciation.
