At Berwick Royal Oak, we believe in living with purpose—and for resident Terry Dance-Bennink, that purpose includes protecting the natural beauty that surrounds us. As chair of our Climate Action Committee, Terry leads with heart and conviction, inspiring others in our community to explore, appreciate, and help safeguard our environment.
Her dedication has sparked countless adventures and learning opportunities for fellow residents—from serene strolls through local gardens to eye-opening visits to landfills and water reservoirs. In this blog, Terry shares just a few highlights of our eco-friendly outings, showcasing the many ways Berwick residents are staying connected to nature and making a difference, one step—and one bus trip—at a time.

It wasn’t a hard choice for many of us at Berwick Royal Oak to take the plunge and move in. We’re located in an eco-friendly oasis known as Victoria—Canada’s most temperate city—surrounded by ocean, forests, and mountains.
A Community That Cares About Climate
Our Climate Action Committee identified just a few of our favourite local eco-sites and thought readers of this blog might be surprised and interested to learn about them.
We’ve explored dozens of eco-friendly jewels with the support of our active living staff and trusty Berwick bus. Walkers and canes are most welcome.
Beyond Butchart: Hidden Natural Treasures

Victoria offers far more than Butchart Gardens (marvel that it is). We’ve also explored other wonderful parks, such as:
- Beacon Hill Park, nestled downtown
- Francis King Park, with its accessible boardwalk
- Swan Lake Nature Reserve, a birdwatcher’s delight
- Beaver/Elk Lake, just a stone’s throw from home
Finnerty Gardens: A Springtime Secret
For those who love exotic gardens, Finnerty Gardens at UVIC is a hidden gem. In spring, rhododendrons and orchid trees create a rainbow of colour. The garden’s winding trails and meditation benches make it a perfect 45-minute, leisurely stroll.
Learning and Growing at the Horticultural Centre
When we want to learn more about plants, flowers, and bonsai trees, we visit the Horticultural Centre of the Pacific. This year-round education hub offers blooming gardens, forest trails, a cozy restaurant, and even a summer arts & music festival—just 10 minutes away.
Local Farms and Fragrant Finds
Many of us grew up on farms, so we love our annual trips to:
- Country Bee Honey Farm for honey-based goodies and up-close animal visits
- The Lavender Farm, offering fields of fragrant blooms and handmade products
Sipping Sustainably: Level Ground Coffee

Yes, we love our coffee too! Level Ground Coffee is a favourite stop—not only for its rich blends but for its commitment to zero waste and full recycling.
Healing Hooves at the Therapeutic Riding Association

One of our most heartwarming outings was to the Victoria Therapeutic Riding Association, where a dozen gentle horses support people of all ages with physical and mental disabilities. We even met their electronic “training” horse—what a discovery!
Waterfront Wonders and Thrifty Treasures
The Sidney waterfront and Shoal Discovery Centre are popular destinations. Add in a lunch stop and breathtaking views of Mt. Baker, and it’s a perfect day. Sidney’s many thrift shops and bookstores let us return with unique finds saved from the landfill.
A Visit to the Landfill? Yes, Really.

Our climate activists are always eager for our trips to the Hartland Landfill, where we learn how the CRD recycles and repurposes waste. On our last visit, we even met a falcon trained to keep seagulls at bay!
The Watershed: Where Conservation Begins
Want to understand how Victoria prepares for droughts and wildfires? A visit to the CRD Watershed is a must. We always bring a picnic and return home inspired by the city’s thoughtful approach to conservation.
An Oasis Within an Oasis
If you’re not up for a drive, our very own Berwick gardens await. With waterfalls, a Japanese garden, rhododendrons, and accessible trails and patios, it’s the perfect place to pause, reflect, and enjoy nature close to home.
Do You See Why We Chose Berwick?
At Berwick Royal Oak, we don’t just live—we thrive, explore, and advocate for the world around us. Thanks to passionate leaders like Terry Dance-Bennink and the support of our community, environmental stewardship isn’t just a value—it’s a way of life.
