Water aerobics is an extremely versatile form of exercise with a lot of benefits. This fun exercise is also one of the best low-impact ways for seniors to stay active and healthy.

The Berwick by the Sea Aquatic Exercise Program has grown into an incredibly successful offering, and much of it attributed to instructor (Active Living Coordinator) Shawna Olsen.  Shawna has 37.5 years of experience working at the Strathcona Pool in Campbell River and came to Berwick with the wealth of knowledge necessary to plan exercises and motivate residents to improve their health and wellbeing.

We were not able to use the Strathcona Pool past the first 6 months, so Shawna went on the hunt for another option. Thanks to our wonderful neighbours, the Comfort Inn & Suites, we residents are able to simply walk next door in their housecoats, enjoy a rewarding exercise class and walk back to Berwick.

We interviewed instructor, Shawna, to find out more about her passion behind the program:

What is you favorite aspect of the program?
“It’s wonderful for me to see the excitement that adding the Aquatic Exercises program brings to Berwick by the Sea.  It is very rewarding for me to be able to share my knowledge and apply my expertise in the aquatic environment. Aquatic Recreation was my career for 37.5 years.”

What are you looking forward to in the next sessions of the program?
“To witness the continuous progress of the participants as they become stronger and more confident in their individual ability. I am also hoping a few new participants join the group.”

What has been the most rewarding part of the program?
“The trust and confidence that I have built with the participants and the continuous commitment they have made to improve their fitness level has been very rewarding for me and the residents.”

What’s your favourite memory of the program?
“There are a variety of abilities within the group. There are a few who have no swimming ability. Participating in this program has been exceptionally rewarding for them. One resident could hardly walk in the water without the fear of falling when she first started attending. Water changes your center of buoyance and can throw you off balance quickly. Over time, she has persevered through the challenge and is now running through the water and giving the class 110% effort. It is always very special as a teacher when you witness great achievement in your student. I can say that this group of residents encourage and support each other and have grown closer.  They are very kind and express to me that it is because of me they are inspired and look forward to each class. I cherish my experience with them as much as they do!”
